Clothing is received in Newcastle and the Hunter, the Central Coast, Taree, Forster/Tuncurry, North Coast, the Namoi, New England and adjacent areas.

What happens with your donation: The Community Helping Hand Association is a Hunter region-based, charity run wholly by volunteers and receives NO government funding or other special support. Our priority is the optimal financial return able to be generated from the limited funds the Association has invested and is dependent on the goodwill and support of local and regional communities in general and on business clients in particular.

A relatively small portion of the clothing available to our recycling business – about 5% – is considered to be of a quality suitable for our disadvantaged clients.

The majority of clothing and other cotton materials received – about 80% – is cut to produce wiping cloths that are sold to commercial and industrial businesses throughout northern NSW. There is about 15% wastage, the responsible disposal of which costs the Association significant funds.

What happens with your donation: The priority is to ensure the optimal financial return is generated from the funds the organisation has invested. We do so currently by operating a nonwoven textiles manufacturing business as well as a clothing recycling and retail business.

Only a relatively small portion of the clothing made available to our recycling business -approximately 5% – is of the quality such that it is either made available to clients of our Emergency Help activities who are in crisis, or is sold through our Retail Stores network.

The majority of clothing -approximately 50% -is exported, primarily into Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.

Items no longer suitable for use as clothing due to rips, staining, etc may be cut to produce wiping cloths. This accounts for approximately 15% of the total recycled volumes of clothing.
