Workshop Details

The Nunnery Community Bike Workshop, at 40 Forbes St, Newtown, collects abandoned bikes and parts to create working bikes to put back into the community. This bikes are put together by you, the community, with help from others who come. It is also a place to fix up your bikes with the tools and parts available. Come and learn to fix bikes, show us how to fix bikes, fix your bike or a friend’s, or just come and have some tea and coffee. Everyone is welcome!

A map is available at the Bikely website. Come around to the backyard where the co-op is being held.

We’re there every Monday evening. Opening times vary but we are usually open by 5pm. If you think you can open up bike club for us one Monday a month, please get in touch. We are usually closed by 9:30pm. Bike Club is outdoors, so keep this in mind if it looks like rain. If it’s raining, feel free to call us to see if we’re there. Same goes with long weekends.

Tools, oil, WD40 and small donations are always welcome, but most of all, we’d like your company while fixing bikes and help keeping the workshop going. The first time you come please ask for detailed tour of how the place works and where stuff goes. After that we ask you spend 20 min maintaining the space every time you come. This labor share is what keeps bike club going. We gratefully take donated bikes and parts that are not going to be used, although some times we have too many. Give us a call and we’ll let you know. To donate a bike outside of Nunnery hours, just give us a call and we’ll tell you the combination to the bike lock on a pole next to the house and you can drop it off at any time.

We do not sell second hand bikes but we can help you find people that do, so feel free to ask. The main reasons we don’t are that we would rather have your help than your money and having some people as customers and some as bike sellers detracts from the community bike workshop.

Caught Short

The Caught Short Film Festival screens on the first Thursday of each month at the TAP Gallery, Darlinghurst.

Caught Short is not a competition! It is a supportive space where film makers can screen their work and be involved in valuable discussion with an audience and other filmmakers.The Caught Short screenings are intimate and inclusive. The TAP Gallery is a community arts space and provides the perfect place for film makers to become accustomed to public screenings, whilst providing the opportunity to network with other artists, filmmakers, actors, festival organisers and many more.

Who are we?

We’re not another charity. We’re not an institution. We Are What We Do is a movement. We’d like to inspire people to use their everyday actions to change the world. Whoever they are. And wherever they are. And that includes you.

We’ve created 100 simple, everyday actions that can improve our environment, our health, and our communities, making our workplaces, planet and the people on it much happier. We started by putting these actions in a book, but the whole movement is getting bigger. And bigger.

Change the World for Ten Bucks was first published in Australia in partnership with Pilotlight Australia. Pilotlight Australia is a charity committed to inspiring and enabling others to find new ways to make a difference to significant social issues. It connects unlikely combinations of people across corporate, community, government and media to generate fresh approaches to philanthropy such as the book, Change the World for Ten Bucks.

As a result of Pilotlight’s support We Are What We Do Australia was established and has gone on to publish our second book, Change the World 9 to 5. We have also spread our wings to New Zealand with the launch of Change the World for Fifteen Bucks in Feb 08.

Where did the idea originate?

We Are What We Do began life as a project of the charity Community Links. Community Links is an innovative inner city charity running community-based projects in east London. Founded by local volunteers , the charity now helps over 50,000 vulnerable children, young people and adults every year. Most of its work is delivered in Newham, one of the poorest boroughs in Europe, whilst Links UK shares the local experience with practitioners and policy makers nationwide through an extensive training, consultancy and publications programme.

How are we funded?

Any profit that we make from the books will go to the expansion of We Are What We Do worldwide, including in Australia and New Zealand.

We aim to continue to work with partners on a pro bono basis to develop new products and initiatives which are modestly priced (and therefore accessible to as many people as possible) but which make a modest surplus which can then be used to develop and sustain the movement around the world.

Who makes it happen?

You do. Everyone does. There are hundreds of people all around the world taking part on various projects – on editions of the book, films, exhibitions and websites, not to mention all the people carrying out actions and helping to spread the word. The amazing thing is that pretty much everyone’s doing it for nothing – well not for money that is. We’re all doing it for the biggest prize there is – the happy knowledge that we are all doing our bit. And our bit counts because others are doing their bit too.

So what can you do?

Well, the short answer is loads…
